Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
